WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY

In regards to matters waste generation, the hotel industry is easily one of the  leading contributors to waste production. This is because the industry is a chief  consumer of resources which lead to generation of this waste.

It is therefore important that the industry is handled with a lot of caution and  effective measures are taken to ensure that there is proper handling of waste and  management in general.

We are going to look at effective ways of waste management in hotels and  restaurants in general.

  1. Characterization and quantification of waste

Categorizing the types and quantity of waste produced in each department  is key in ensuring that waste is managed properly e.g. office waste such as  papers and documents, household waste and organic waste such as  vegetable and fruit peels. Once categorized, the different types of waste  can be segregated in color-coded bins for easy waste management.

We are pleased to inform you that we at mama@co.ke incorporate use of said  color-coded bins in our garbage collection services.

  1. Understand waste hierarchy

This concept provides options to manage waste by prevention,  minimization, reuse, recycle, recovery and disposal which prevents a lot of  waste from going into the waste stream.

Recovery is said to be the most important part of the process because  some value of the material is recovered through recycling. The last step is  disposal which generally involves landfill and incineration of waste.

Some of the measures that can be incorporated include but are not limited to;

  1. Using refillable dispensers for soaps (body wash, hand wash, dish wash),  shampoos and conditioners
  2. Using washable cloth products and dish ware instead of using the  disposable ones

iii. Using water filters instead of using plastic bottles

  1. Reducing and reusing supplies packaging materials
  2. Reducing the number of paper products
  3. Switching to LED lights
  4. Data analysis

Most of the waste generated in the hotel industry is sent to landfills  without it being treated properly. The first step in managing the data  analysis of waste is to perform waste audit which involves identifying the  process of productivity from waste management practices in hotels. Volume of waste can be immensely reduced by use of trash compactors or  industrial balers which in return reduces the cost of waste disposal. 4. Model and framework development

A framework is developed with special focus on which can save cost on  local vendors and labour cost for handling waste. This can be classified into  two:

  1. Profitability from recyclable and compostable waste- this is from  the method of generating profit from the business events in a firm. ii. Sustainability from waste management- when the social, economic  and environmental aspects are taken care of and has all the required  conditions to sustain from managing waste, any framework can  survive if these three suspects are sustained.

Managing waste in hotels and restaurants is one of the major issues we need to  deal with due to the high rate at which the waste is generated. So as to reduce  the environmental impact, it is mandatory for the hotel industry to develop a  complete framework that helps in optimizing each waste material.
